Projects

Szavanna March 19th, 2007

The reason for this page is to tell you about the projects we are involved in and also tell you about starting & running projects in general.

Normally by the word open we usually mean projects based on open source principles :

  • the fact that we use only open source software when using computers as part of a project
  • try as much as possible to use and create open content materials as part of the project and make it freely available via the web
  • that it is open to anyone from any country - well normally to those that have internet access - we have yet to come up with solutions to reach those without access to the NET
  • that all projects have some kind of an online presence and can be viewed online by anyone
  • that all projects are there for everyone to build on - we encourage collaborations, remixes, derivatives - so that noone has to reinvent the wheel

I am involved in different open source and open content projects.

We also started two such projects ourselves:

OpenCafe - Building open communties

OpenCafe projects

The OpenCafe is an open source Internet cafe in Potchefstroom, South Africa that provides support for the use of open source software.

ArtMarketOnline - free support with using online tools for artists

ArtMarketOnline

ArtMarketOnline is a project run by the OpenCafe team - it uses open source and open content tools to help its members set up their art sites, art blogs, learn to market and publish their art work online and how to take part in online collaboration projects like ccMixter and Wikipedia.
