Youssou N’Dour: Birima

Szavanna April 1st, 2009

He assumed the throne of Cajor
And became well-known for his festive reign
Where every occasion was reason for
Celebration in great style
Having inherited a rich oral tradition
He encouraged local musicians
And his patronage gave rise to the flourishing of
The music known as mbaboor

Ah! Birima!
A day spent in your presence
Was the picture of hospitality!

This music was transmitted by the griots
Who painted vivid portraits of the kingdom
Mbaboor became inextricably linked
To the history of Cajor
Most importantly, it forged a new and enduring link
Between royalty and the common people
Where relations had been different before
As the classes lived and struggled and
Celebrated together
Common experience allowed them to identify
With one another

Ah! Birima!
A day spent in your presence
Was the picture of hospitality!

Szavanna March 31st, 2009

From the Album of the same name the wonderful Ismael Lo from Senegal.

Ak loo fa meun ta am ak noo fa meun ta mel bul fatte Afrika
Afrika a a a Afrika a a
Afrika a a a Afrika mon Afrique

Onon bibbe Afrika ngimode, ngimode liggo-den leydi men
Ngaccen hasi daagal yoo Alla suren e musibaadi
Yoo Alla addu jam to Ruanda
Yoo Alla addu jam to Burundi
Yoo Alla addu jam to Casamans
Lawol Mbignona yee

Let’s help business in Kedougou

Szavanna March 7th, 2009

Kari says here:

I grew up among the Budik tribe in Southern Senegal, West Africa. This tribe is filled with some of the most beautiful people you will ever meet, inside and out, and I want to spend a year there cataloguing individual and tribal stories.

The Budik tribe lives in the small village of Chobo, in beautiful southern Senegal. I grew up among these people and would love the opportunity to return and document the changes that have taken place. Many have grown up, many married, some have died.

The region is mountainous and has two seasons, rainy and dry. African storms are breathtaking, the sky grows dark and violent and the rain comes down from the mountains in sheets while we dance in the fields. In the dry season the watering holes dry up and food supplies start to run out.

I want to spend a year in this tribe, living in a mud house with a grass roof photographing daily village life.

With the prize money I would start a sustainable business in Chobo, the creation and sale of free trade African fabrics. Everything would be produced in the village for the benefit of the village, from growing the cotton to spinning it into thread to weaving it into cloth and sewing it into beautiful wearable art.

Help me make this dream a reality. There will always be a place for you in Chobo.

Click here to vote and help Kari’s dream come true! I will be following developments in Kedougou on my blog :)
