The importance of telling the stories and remembering them

Aug.10,2007I just discovered a new TED talk by Chris Abani, who reminded me of the importance of telling the stories.
Not only telling them but remembering them as well otherwise one ends up telling the same story all over again. If one looks at things from this angle one sees the huge importance of blog culture in today’s world.
I think very often we forget the stories and keep on repeating the same mistakes all over again. It’s important to remember and learn from past events in order to improve – to me it seems that most of the time we don’t succeed to do so – as if things seem to happen to us all the time and we have no control over them.
He also reminds me of the importance of artists in communities (the writers, the poets, the singers…) – they are the ones that one should listen to when learning about a community rather than watching the news which almost always gives a completely distorted view of events and people. That is probably the reason behind experimenting with our art projects – during these few years I did get in touch and worked together with artists from South Africa and other African countries – they all taught me a lot about traditions, events & people – stories that I never see in mainstream media.
